Yoruba Drum
|
 |
Description:
This month's selection is
a Yoruba drum. It is believed to come from the Palace of Ijesha
of the Ijebu kingdom, carved in the 18th century. The Ijebu disintegrated
during the 18th and 19th centuries, but were revived by the colonial
powers at the end of the 19th century and today still form the
political structure of the Yoruba people. Examination of the drum
shows 18 heads in relief and three standing figures. The manner
in which the hair is worn (somewhat of a tall crown) indicates
an aristocratic motif. The aristocracy is further manifested in
the interlace at the base of the drum. The carving is excellent
and the piece is well preserved.
